I'm Such a Dork

I will be the first to admit I have a soft spot for female vocalists. Dido, Shirley Manson, Imogen Heap, Sinead Lohan1, you get the idea.

Well, I've finally listened to Lily Allen's album Alright Still. Considering my last encounter with fad Britgirl pop was Lady Sovereign, I wasn't expecting much.2 But I was pleasantly surprised. When I first heard her single "Smile", I thought it was OK, but would soon get sickening due to massive overplay. But then I don't listen to commercial radio very much3, so I never got sick of it. Plus, you could catch her kinda Cockney, kinda Brit accent4, and I thought it was both good and bad - interesting, but ultimately distracting.

I listened, and the verdict is in: I like it. Of course, I must qualify this statement by saying it's 5am, and I have been up for 17 hours, but I don't think it's affecting my judgment. Her singing is nice, the lyrics are actually clever, the music is catchy but not sickening, and there are some real surprises on the album.

So, make sure you listen to it at least once.

To get you in the mood, I've embedded two videos. The first is of her song "Alfie". Just listen. Trust me.

The second is her first single "Smile". Except it's in Simlish, the language of the Sims. As I state flat out in the title of this post, I am a dork.

Finally, another joke5: Train. Soccer ball. Simolean sign.

1. Who???
2. Although after re-listening to a couple of Lady Sov's songs while researching this article, it's not as meh as I remembered. I might have to grab a couple songs for my "One Hit Wonder" compilation mp3 disc.
3. I just broke my arm patting myself on my back. I also got my head wedged in a doorway.
4. You know, the kind that substitutes F for TH, especially if the TH is preceded by an R, like in "Martha", or rather, "Marfa". And drops T's as well: "fitted" becomes "fi'id".
5. No, not me, you turds.

It's a Happy Day

Well, after too many years of paying, our mortgage is finally paid off.

Huzzah!

To top it off, we got a check back from the company for overpayment.

Huzzah! Huzzah!

But now we need to watch our statements to ensure they stopped the auto-withdrawals.

Huzzah?

My Eyes!

This past Saturday, while out and about, we went to my wife's parent's house to check on their cats. They recently got two Tonkinese, a brother/sister combo named Joey and Zoe. They are cute, and naughty, and apparently they make my eyes blister.

Because after petting them, I rubbed my eye. 30 minutes later I noticed I had a blister on my left eye. What an icky, icky experience. It was orange-ish, and it irritated my eyelid, and it looked like my eye was bleeding because it was so red. I'm sure the Meijer employees thought I was a ghoul.

But, it didn't stop me from watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. So there.

An Incomplete Being

This past Friday I had my wisdom teeth removed. It was a long time coming - probably 5 years or more in the making. My dentist wanted me to have them out for a while now, mainly because they were starting to become cavity-ridden. So after making a dental appointment I decided to do something about my perpetual trench mouth and have them removed. I made the appointment and began waiting.

One thing that the oral surgeon wanted was a panoramic X-ray, which my dentist's office could take and send to the surgery. So after taking out my earrings, I stepped up to the machine, and proceeded to not fit. If I touched my forehead to the rest, my chin didn't rest on the chin rest. Not only that, but the bite piece wasn't tall enough to get my chin under. It was a pano machine for ants! So I took my rings out for nothing, and had a hell of a time getting the beads back to where they belonged later. (It was for this reason that I got horseshoe-type rings with screw-on beads on each end. No more fiddling with small slippery beads for me!)

The actual surgery went smoothly. There really wasn't anything quirky to report, except the first thing I remember when I came to was asking for my teeth. I got them. And what teeth they were. The dentist said it was a good thing they came out when they did, otherwise I would have been looking at an abscess in at least one of them. Oh, the tooth is glorious! Half of the crown was rotted away, and there was actual black stuff there! It probably wasn't the root, but it might have been the pulp. All I know is it looked awful. I have a feeling it was the lower molar that was constantly having my gum fold over it, and maybe the saliva and whatnot were eating away at the enamel. Regardless, it's neat in its grotesqueness. The other likely suspect was (probably) the other lower molar. Although it wasn't in a glorious state of decay like the other, looked to be well on its way. The other two are pretty normal considering what the other two looked like.

So now it's been a few days, and I miss my Vicodin right now. I also miss potato chips and bacon. We made a garlic-potato soup - 'cause it was soft - and I wished I could have had bacon/bacon bits, but alas! I couldn't. I'll be able to eat them again soon, but the wait... Oh, the wait!...

But when I get home I have chicken in the fridge waiting for me, and some candied yams, and we shall make home-made beef vegetable soup tonight and I shall have my beef fix that I so desperately need/want. Mmmmm, beef...
